Microsoft: A Crumbling Digital Empire
So will it actually take market share from Microsoft? I think the answer is "yes".Google set to challenge Microsoft's office monopoly | The Register
This is just another in a series of events that indicate the trouble Microsoft is in. I have never been a Microsoft fan of any sort, but in no way is what I'm about to say a reflection of some kind of bias.
The reason I've never liked Microsoft, is because they've never offered a quality product. It's almost as if everything they've ever released hasn't really been thought all the way through. There was a period of time during which you could describe Microsoft as innovative, but that period of time has long passed. If I had the time to research the many claims by many respectable companies such as Symantec and Apple that Microsoft has stolen code from them, I would, but there are just simply too many instances of them.
These days, Microsoft is a company that makes me feel uncomfortable, almost embarrassed for them. They hop on bandwagons far too late and then they don't follow through. Live search, for instance. How many times have we seen some supposed "face-lift" for the search which turns out to be nothing but a slight tweak of the code and a name change? It's almost as if they're playing trial and error with logos, names and layouts. Another example is the Zune. It's almost a complete joke next to the iPod. The Amazon.com Best Sellers list in the Electronics category today, shows 10 different models of iPods in the top 100 sellers and not a single Zune. Their latest attempts at grabbing some of the DAP market share include throwing a frat party (Gizmodo: Microsoft Sponsors Frat Party to Make Zune Cool) and waking up residents of Manhattan at 3am (Microsoft's bumpin' Zune SUV disturbs the New York peace).
And now, with reports from Dell that it's customers want pre-installed Linux and Open Office (Dell's IdeaStorm Site Yields Overwhelming Request for Linux) and the fact that Vista is this much of a joke:

is all just indicative of the fact that the computing and technology industries are peddling to a much more knowledgeable market these days. Whereas before, all of this was such new technology, we were happy just to be able to use any of it and figure it out and navigate our way through this incredible digital revolution, we now know what we want. We now demand a certain level of quality out of the products we purchase to take part in this digital era. And Microsoft has not adapted to that.
I say all of this not because I'm an incurable Apple-addict, I say this because it's true. It would be true even if Apple did not exist. Microsoft is crumbling before our very eyes and it's a terrible waste. I'm positive the company has an incredible amount of talent on staff that, given free range to innovate, could blow our minds. I'm not sure why Microsoft isn't tapping into that, but if they don't soon, it will be their own demise.
