Resistance is Futile: Google Assimilates JotSpot

As we built the business over the past three years Google consistently attracted our attention. We watched them acquire Writely, and launch Google Groups, Google Spreadsheets and Google Apps for Your Domain. It was pretty apparent that Google shared our vision for how groups of people can create, manage and share information online. Then when we had conversations with people at Google we found ourselves completing each other's sentences. Joining Google allows us to plug into the resources that only a company of Google's scale can offer, like a huge audience, access to world-class data centers and a team of incredibly smart people.
Official Google Blog: Spot on

Prediction: It will not be long before the only piece of software we need to do everything on our computers we do now, is a browsers.

Do you suppose there will come a time when the only domain name we need to know is Google.com?

Is blogging in the military dangerous?

Some of the web's more popular "milblogs" -- blogs maintained by
present or former active duty military personnel -- are going quiet
following a renewed push by U.S. military officials to scan sites for
security risks.
Wired News: Under Fire, Soldiers Kill Blogs

Honestly, I think the men and women who blog in the military are probably smart enough to know not to publish sensitive material, being as their safefty is put at the most risk of anyone's should any sort of military intelligence be leaked. These "so-called" security risks that military blogging poses, is most likely non-existent. Seems like plain old censorship to me. What do you think?

A good idea for keyword research

Over the years I’ve added search boxes to my websites to see what people entered, and the results are amazing. Adding a search form gives you an opportunity to do keyword research in “real time”, and this could be very important if your niche covers fast moving products. People don’t generally search anything like what several of the online keyword tools show you...

Internet Explorer slowly catching up?

Don't be alarmed. If you're still using Internet Explorer 6, much less
any older version, you need this upgrade. You've been stuck with a
browser that lends you too little help in staying on top of the Web,
and out of trouble on it.

Competing browsers, such as Firefox, Opera and Safari, have provided
solutions for those problems for years. As a result, Firefox in
particular has carved a chunk out of IE's once-overwhelming market
share.
Must-Have Browser Upgrades - washingtonpost.com

I hear the most major upgrade in IE7 is tabbed browsing. Good to see Microsoft keeping up... 5 years later.

"You need this upgrade". At this point I would love to be introduced to a serious web user who doesn't see the inumerable benefits there are to ditching IE all-together. For anything else: Flock, Firefox, etc. It's like stubbornly insisting that your favorite medium with which to listen to music is still the eight-track.

Uncle Frank, is this a joke?

The case focused on Google’s news aggregation service, which
automatically scans the websites of newspapers, extracting headlines
and snippets of text from each story. These are displayed at Google
News and the headlines link users to the full stories on the source
sites. Newspaper group Copiepresse, which represents leading Belgian,
French and German publications, said this amounted to copyright
infringement and a breach of database rules because its members had not
been asked for permission.
Is Google legal? | The Register

Oh, come on. This whole "sue Google for just about anything" trend has gotten a bit crazy at this point. I mean, if I were an exec within the ranks of Copiepresse, I'd see Google's use of my newspapers' articles as great publicity and jump on the chance to generate extra advertising revenue from the new web site traffic. What kind of a company sues another for, really, publicizing it free of cost?

And even more laughable is this company's desire for permission to be asked before linking to one of their articles and offering a short teaser to draw in readers? Are they serious? Do they not understand how many trillions of times a day this happens to every newspaper article made available on the web and that trying to stop it can be likened to trying to stop the Earth from spinning? I mean, even the members-only news sites out there can be easily foiled.

My advice to Copiepresse is to stop being so utterly absurd and take advantage of this new traffic, finding ways to get even more traffic from the most-used search engine in the world.

Ze Frank on Web Site Traffic

nobody knows how to determine the value of a web property or web audience given loose concepts like "page views" and "complete downloads."
ze's page :: zefrank.com: rocketbooming

Ze Frank is my absolute favorite video blogger. You can catch his daily show here: theShow - a guaranteed laugh.

I was surprised to see on his personal blog, however, something so relevant to web site marketing. I suppose it is to be expected, the man is an absolute genius when it comes to all things web, including attracting a massive audience to some of the most innovative, fun and silly things on the internet.

What he says in the quote above is very true and the only real way to determine the value of the traffic going to your web site is through feedback of any kind. On a blog it can be comments, on a commercial web site it can be inquiries made into the product or service being sold, on a forum it can be the number of people who actively take part in the discussions.

This is why interactive features are so important, as well as creating as many ways as possible for your audience to get in touch with you.

Obey the Google

Usage: 'Google' as verb referring to searching for information via any conduit other than Google.
Example: "I googled him on Yahoo and he seems pretty interesting."
Our lawyers say: Bad. Very, very bad. You can only "Google" on the Google search engine. If you absolutely must use one of our competitors, please feel free to "search" on Yahoo or any other search engine.
Official Google Blog: Do you "Google?"

A great article from the Official Google Blog about the future of the fresh new verb, Google. In probably one of the most stunning examples of effective branding in present day, the word Google was added to the Oxford dictionary as a verb recently. But is it too much? Will the word one day evolve into one that really has nothing to with the company, like Xerox or Kleenex?

Whatever the case, Ze Frank says to obey 'the Google".

Republican Bombing Google

A New Campaign Tactic: Manipulating Google Data - New York Times
"Fifty or so other Republican candidates have also been made targets in a sophisticated “Google bombing” campaign intended to game the search engine’s ranking algorithms. By flooding the Web with references to the candidates and repeatedly cross-linking to specific articles and sites on the Web, it is possible to take advantage of Google’s formula and force those articles to the top of the list of search results."
Sigh. Politicians... always looking for the easy way. Of course, they don't seem to have a great grasp on the whole concept of keyword research, being as they're Google Bombing their sites for their own names.

I hope they all get dropped from the engine. Play fair kids, it pays off more in the long run.

Yahoo Updates Toolbar and Bookmarks

"Yahoo is releasing a new version of its toolbar with a powerful new bookmarking feature that integrates seamlessly with Yahoo web search, and features a "radical" new user interface.

The new Yahoo toolbar has an improved search function that uses an auto-complete feature to make suggestions as you type. Yahoo has also made it easier to create your own custom buttons on the toolbar. If you want to create a button that takes you to a particular site, enter its URL and Yahoo will
automatically search for the site's favicon logo and use it for the button, if one is available."

Im still waiting for a Yahoo to follow Google with a page ranking system, the toolbar I found useful for web surfers and not really any great purposes for much else.  I thought I would share with you all, but Im off to take the tool bar off my web browser!

MSN Live Book Search - Microsoft's focus on software sales fading?

The deal, which will enable Microsoft to forge ahead with its Live Book Search portal, indicates Microsoft's commitment to its move towards developing online and on-demand services and away from its traditional revenue drivers - the sale and licensing of software.
Guardian Unlimited Books | News | Deal takes Microsoft further into Google territory

This is pretty interesting because it sort of hints at something I've wondered about myself a few times. Most newspapers have turned the loss of doorstep paper subscriber revenue into the gain of online advertising revenue by offering the papers online for free. I wonder if perhaps some software manufacturers will turn their loss in revenue due to increasing software piracy into a gain in revenue by offering their software packages for free in an online Web 2.0 environment in which advertising revenues can be unlimited. Microsoft is certainly a great candidate for such a shift, being as they already have one of the most-used online communities. Of course, they'd have to step up their game some, as Google continues to take more of the web based mail market share.

Personally I'd like to see Apple get into the social networking, Web 2.0 game. We'd probably see some pretty incredible innovations from them. .Mac is a pretty incredible online offering from them already, but will never capture a significant chunk of the Web 2.0 community by asking members to pay.

Google Going Solar

Official Google Blog: Corporate solar is coming
Soon we plan to begin installation of 1.6 megawatts of solar photovoltaic panels at our Mountain View campus. This project will be the largest solar installation on any corporate campus in the U.S., and we think it's one of the largest on any corporate site in the world. The panels will cover the roofs of the four main buildings of the Googleplex, and also those of two additional buildings across the street. There will also be a portion of this installation on new solar panel support structures in a few parking lots. The amount of electricity that will be generated is equivalent to powering about 1,000 average California homes. We’ll use that electricity to power several of our Mountain View office facilities, offsetting approximately 30% of our peak electricity consumption at those buildings.

The Search for the Ultimate SEO Browser Setup

In light of the recent news floating around the web that Internet Explorer's market share has reached an all-time low (Techworld.com - Internet Explorer usage continues to fall), I thought I would share with you my own highs and lows as an SEO searching for the best browser set-up.

Up until the first release of the Google toolbar, I had always been a loyal Safari user. Safari's speed, built-in RSS reader, and it's pop-up blocker were all great selling points for me. But when the Google Toolbar was released, I was less than pleased to learn that they hadn't released a version for Safari users. I found my way around it, as I outlined in Toolbars, Desktop Search and Mac Users, and was pleased with my setup until Google released the Toolbar for Firefox.

I downloaded and tried my hand with the Firefox browser. It was very fast, Open Source and incredibly customizeable with a myriad of add-ons, not just the Google Toolbar. But as an avid Apple user - some even refer to me as an Apple evangelist - it takes a lot more than just a Toolbar and some fancy buttons to pull me from my beloved Apple-made Safari. To me, it just wasn't enough and I switched back to Safari.

Then, a couple of months ago, I read about a new browser, Flock. It had features galore, and a library full of add-ons to customize the application. As an avid blogger, what caught my attention was the built-in blog editor, so I downloaded the application and gave it a whirl. I fell in love and wrote about it: Amazing New Browser - Flock!

Soon enough I did realize there were some problems with Flock, though, such as the fact that it was a RAM hog, and because it is still in beta, it crashed often. But I continued to use it for it's blogging features, Flickr integration, and the built-in newsreader.

Until yesterday. As I sifted through my RSS feeds, reading the latest in tech news, I saw a lot of people talking about the latest Firefox release. I read a lot of great reviews and decided to give Firefox another try. So I updated my older version of Firefox and sifted through the thousands upon thousands of add-ons and extensions for the program and finally found a setup that made my job as a blogger, an SEO and a business owner a lot easier. Here's how I have it set-up:

1. I installed the extension called Performancing for blogging. This blog editor is far more powerful than the built-in blog tool for Flock and the Blogger button on the Google Toolbar. It also allows for the addition of technorati tags, saving posts as drafts or "notes". You can blog with multiple blogs and multiple blogging platforms. It supports technorati searching to find out who links to your blog right in your editor. You can also sign up for a Performancing Metrics account to track your blog statistics and view them within your editor as well. It has a del.ici.ous tab with which you can post bookmarks to your del.ici.ous account. This tool also saves your blogging history so you can go back, read and make reference to previous articles you posted with Performancing. This is absolutely invaluable to an SEO, as any good search marketer knows how fruitful blogging can be, especially with the addition of technorati tags and del.ici.ous bookmarks.

For more info on Performancing, see the Firefox extension page or the Performancing web site.

Google Book Search

"A few book publishers are actually thanking Google for an apparent rise in sales due to Google's scan plan. Google is busy defending itself against authors and publishers that have brought lawsuits for ignoring copyrights. The director of the Oxford University Press said, 'Google Book Search has helped us turn searchers into consumers.' It seems to work in favor of the smaller publishers: 'Walter de Gruyter/Mouton-De Gruyter, a German publisher, said its encyclopedia of fairy tales has been viewed 471 times since appearing in the program, with 44 percent of them clicking on the 'buy this book' Google link.' Do you think that Google's 'sneak peak' search access increases sales or violates copyrights on intellectual property?"

Slashdot | Publishers Thank Google for Book Sales

as the old saying goes, no publicity is bad publicity. as a very serious book lover myself, i can tell you that no matter how much of a text i can find in digital format for free, it will never replace a real copy of the book in hand. just take a look at my amazon wishlist.

Cuban still thinks Google is crazy

Mark Cuban, who last week said that only a "moron" would buy YouTube, today writes in a post titled "I still think Google is crazy :)"

Boing Boing: Google buys YouTube: GooTube.

In light of the recent news that Google has agreed to purchase YouTube, Entrepreneur Mark Cuban maintains that the deal is a poor one. Last week he said that anyone who bought YouTube is a "moron".

Join our discussion on this topic here: http://discussions.abalone.ca/showthread.php?t=84

An excerpt from the discussion:

unfortunately, what cuban fails to remember is that his are the same cries that were heard when people started sharing mp3s - a trend that led to the success of iTunes, the iPod and a million musicians around the world who would have otherwise gone unnoticed. sharing videos, sharing music. it's really not much different. and as iTunes has already shown it recognizes this inevitable change in how we view video copyright laws by recently starting to sell movies alongside mp3s in it's music store, so will all the other smart companies out there. and chances are, youtube is one of these smart companies, considering they have already signed a deal with warner to distribute music videos.

Google, computer repair and sushi

"In early 2005, computer repair company Rescuecom sued Google in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, alleging that Google was violating trademark by selling ads to Rescuecom's competitors that show up next to search results when someone types in "Rescuecom."

Judge sides with Google in dispute over keywords | CNET News.com

I wonder what kind of company would purchase the name of their competitor in their pay-per-click keyword ad campaign? How targeted is that, really? Does it even work? Web 2.0 Wars

"Yahoo Mail recently launched their new webmail service, dubbed Beta(yes just like gmail) no doubt hoping to win back market share in the world of webmail. Their prime competition is gmail, which they've modeled some of the new features on"

Slashdot | The Troubles With the Yahoo! Mail Beta

I'm not sure why the other search engines keep missing the idea here, but the idea is innovation. When you model your "new" services off of someone else's old ones, you're not going to attract a new audience. What keeps Google in the forefront of the search engine race, is it's absolute commitment to innovation, new, fresh ideas. Google Earth, the Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, Gmail, and so on and so forth, are just a few examples of how Google continues to offer us brand new services, not mere carbon copies of what the other guys have done. Until Yahoo! and MSN start to deliver their own new ideas, Google will remain the king of search.

How long should search engines retain search data?

Slashdot | Calif. Initiative To Regulate Search Engines?

This is an interesting question, especially for the SEO industry. When search engines keep search data, they can compile it and publish it for markting purposes. This comes in very handy for SEOs. Services such as Wordtracker and the Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool are invaluable to us as it helps us choose the best direction in which to lead our clients for top results. Another great use of search data is Google Zeitgeist.

But retention of such data can become a touchy subject when the data becomes more personal. Locations, IP addresses, email addresses, etc. being kept in combination with your search data might be troublesome to some people. And in recent times, discussion about sharing this information with government intelligence agencies has popped up here and there. Similar to the NSA wiretapping issues, people feel their privacy is being comprimised.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the risks of not collecting such intelligence outweighs the benefits of personal privacy? Or vice versa? What search data tools do you use? Discuss these questions and more in our forums, Groupthink.
